About the Barcelona Cathedral
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia is the spiritual heart of the Gothic Quarter and one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries on the site of an ancient early Christian basilica, it stands out for its imposing Neo-Gothic façade, its rich artistic heritage, and its role as the seat of the Diocese of Barcelona. It is a must-see monument that embodies centuries of devotion, legends, and the city’s living history.
What to See During Your Visit
The guided tour allows you to explore the cathedral and its cloister with a certified guide, enjoying priority access without waiting in line. During the tour, you’ll discover the iconic, beautifully carved wooden choir, the historic side chapels, and the famous cloister where thirteen white geese live. You’ll also climb up to the rooftop terraces to admire a 360-degree panoramic view of the rooftops of the Old Town and the Barcelona skyline.
“To enter a Gothic cathedral is to cross the threshold where stone becomes prayer and light becomes mystery.” — Victor Hugo
Fun Facts
- The cloister is always home to exactly 13 white geese, a number that pays tribute to the age at which Saint Eulalia, the co-patron saint of Barcelona, was martyred.
- The choir stalls still feature the painted coats of arms of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece, dating from the important meeting held there by Emperor Charles V in 1519.
- The remains of Saint Eulalia rest in a carved marble tomb inside the crypt built beneath the main altar.
